区営鰻温泉 - Unagi Hot Spring - 3/10 & 3/11/2025

My Experience - I could not find much at all about this place other than "Walk through the secluded Unagi Onsen, a hot-spring town where the samurai Saigo Takamori spend some time at to unwind and recover. See the pristine Lake Unagi, and try cooking the natural way with a 'sume,' an oven that uses steam from hot springs!"
...Which appears to mostly be "it" for this little town.
From my perspective it's the places with the least information that often yield the biggest rewards. After driving from Kagoshima south and making a couple quick stops by Lake Ikeda, it was getting dark and I was looking for a place to both sleep for the evening and enjoy onsen...and I found it...almost by mistake...
I found a place at Unagi onsen that showed day-use onsen pulled in just around evening time and used this hot spring Unagi Hot Spring 区営鰻温泉. I paid 300 Yen and ventured into this small bathing area (2 other men were using) but once I bathed and got in the waters....magic, very, very hot which was just what I needed that evening considering it was very cold. These are by far some of the hottest onsen waters I have experienced.... so hot the owner (lady who manages it) came in to run some cold water in the bath area thinking it might be too much for me. This was the very same lady who made me steam vegetable and egg breakfast (steamed on the sume) after I completed a morning bath.
Anyway, to my surprise the visit here wasn't just another hot spring but had multiple elements...
1. every home in the town has traditional Sume (steam cooking)
2. the town was once inhabited by Saigo Takamori who had several dogs therefore each "point of interest" in the town is marked by a named stoned dog statue which is very unique for a small area like this. There are several articles about Saigo Takamori however I linked to Wikipedia
3. very hot hot springs
4. very clean, modern restrooms and parking lot of an overnight stay
I stayed the evening in the parking lot here Eel Pond parking lot 鰻池駐車場. It rain heavily most of the evening and was pretty cold woke up early to walk the small Unagi Onsen town prior to the bath opening. Once completed with bath I explored the Ibusuki area including the Iwasaki Museum 岩崎美術館 and the Ibusuki Iwasaki Hotel 指宿いわさきホテル (which will be closed in late April for a 2-3 year full renovation and upgrade project to modernize the entire property.
If you have ever seen The Shining, the Ibusuki Iwasaki Hotel reminds me of this. It's a massive, cavernous hotel where one can definitely get lost and when I went there he said they only had 10 rooms book the prior night (with around 1,000 rooms). Talking to front desk staff he mentioned they earn enough to pay the bills however the hotel was built in 70's and is long overdue for major overhaul.
Additionally I visited the Saraku Sand Bath Hall 砂むし会館砂楽 which was also very enjoyable and "comforting".
About
It is located within the city limits of Ibusuki, Kagoshima on Kyūshū island, Japan, and there are associated hot springs.
Lake Unagi is within the larger and older Ata Caldera and technically its water fills in Unagi maar. Shortly after the Ikeda Caldera forming eruption of 4800 years ago a fissure vent line southeast of the caldera evolved that produced the maar eruption that formed Lake Unagi and then the pumiceous Yamagawa base surge. Ikezoko maar is more proximal in the vent line from the Ikeda Caldera to the north. Narikawa maar is to the south, between Unagi maar and the Yamagawa maar which is partially backfilled by the sea.
