About

Volcanic Japan

Volcanic Japan is a personal documentation project dedicated to exploring, hiking, and recording every active and historically significant volcano across the Japanese archipelago. Japan sits atop the Pacific Ring of Fire and is home to over 110 active volcanoes — more than almost any other country on Earth. This site exists to catalogue those experiences, one summit at a time.

Each journal entry covers a specific volcanic location: the approach, the terrain, the smells of sulfur and steam, the mountain huts, the onsen towns below, and the raw geological power that has shaped Japanese culture for millennia. Posts include original photography, trip details, experience tags, and honest reflections on what it means to stand on land that is still very much alive.

The Gear section showcases the equipment used across these journeys — from trail footwear tested on loose volcanic scree to electronics that have survived summit weather. Reviews are personal and based on real use in real conditions.

Volcanic Japan is built and maintained by Kris Kazan, a long-time Japan resident with a deep passion for its volcanic landscapes, outdoor culture, and the unique communities that thrive in geothermally active regions. Kris also runs the Active Volcano App and Matsunotora, a volcanic hiking gear brand.

Whether you are a hiker planning your first Japanese volcano, a geology enthusiast, or simply someone who finds beauty in fire and stone — this site is for you.
